My Wife Watches Anime Based on Eroge, Yuri, and Otaku-ism.
How? Some of you may remember my article “Are you a Hentai-Otaku?!” of heated debate. This article is no different. So my wife watches anime based on eroge. She’s also fine with yuri, and she quite enjoyed a series full of otaku-trivia. Before all that, she was never interested in anime, and never really appreciated the art style. So how did it happen? You want your significant other to enjoy anime with you too? I might not have the answer specifically for you, but my story may provide you with some insight. (note this only covers anime series, and not OVAs or movies)
About a decade ago, I tried to expose my wife to some anime. Problem was, the first real exposure was to La Blue Girl for reasons I can’t remember. It was a mistake at the time that I didn’t realize, or intended as a first viewing. What I really wanted to do was show her Love Hina. She got mad at me (like Naru would) within the first 10 minutes of the show when Naru showed up in the hot spring with Keitaro. On her mind, “all anime and all Japanese pop-culture revolve around sexual perversion. Most Japanese people are perverted, and focus on a perverted society of sexual innuendos, and sexual promotion.”
This was not a good start to getting my wife to share my interests. I quickly gave up.
This is where all the hot perverted sex happens.
A few years ago, I decided that the only way to get her to watch some anime, was to show her something that she would like. Something incredibly girly and cute. As a result, I sat through 70 episodes of Card Captor Sakura with her. She had gotten some previous exposure to it before with a few images here and there, and a theme song or two.
I think it was difficult for her at first, but she watched, and started to really like the show. The characters were adorable, and there was some form of love story in there (though it’s more of a crush instead). She didn’t like the darker tone of the second season, but watched anyway. I was only mildly into it. But it was good watching anime with her. (as a side note, this was her first exposure to a relatively innocent form of yuri)
What normal girl would not want to watch this series. C’mon.
Immediately after, I showed her Chobits. I figured this was a fairly decent natural progression, bringing in the best of Clamp, and introducing her to a series more mature than CC Sakura. “It’s by the same people who did Card Captor!” I said. This got her a little more interested in watching the series. She liked it. The romance was good, she thought Chii was sweet, but stupid, and she wasn’t entirely put-off by the fan-service.
Hot loligoth yuri action = win.
Shortly after, I started watching Azumanga Daioh. She was mildly interested in it, and thought Chiyo-chan was incredibly cute (the penguin costume won btw). She didn’t like Osaka because of her incredibly dense personality. This was probably the weakest response I’ve gotten from her in watching anime. Not sure what it was that she didn’t like about it. I think it was because the humor was not clever, and just seemed silly. At the time, our exercise machine was in the same room as the TV, so I literally forced her to watch it while she was exercising. She now seems to have no recollection of what the series was about. I intend to have her watch it again sometime for the win, but the priority for that is pretty low.
To me, this series wins the internet, and will always win.
After a while, she wasn’t interested in anime anymore. I asked a mutual friend of ours for recommendations, and he suggested Nodame Cantabile. I had no idea what it was about, so I gave it a go, since he said it was a good anime. She was hesitant at first, not knowing what she was in for. Personally, I liked the show too. It didn’t have as much romance as I had thought it would, and actually focused a lot on the motivations of the two main characters, and their struggles to reach their goals. I don’t think my wife really realized this was the case, and thought the series had a lot of romance. She thoroughly enjoyed it.
This scene turned my wife into an otaku.
After Nodame was done, she was wanting to watch more anime. When she heard that the manga continues on where the anime ends, she obsessively searched for scanilations. My wife, reading scanilations! Who’d have thought! After she read up to the current volume, she had nothing else to do. I asked my friend for suggestions again, and he said “Why not watch Haruhi?”. This was unusual. I hadn’t seen Haruhi yet at that time, so I thought it might be cool. I insisted that our friend recommended it. She has only met the guy once, but seems to hold a good deal of respect and compassion for him. Probably because he’s a respectable and compassionate guy.
She thought that the Haruhi series was weird and didn’t make sense. She liked the characters, thought the fan-service was unnecessary, and liked the art style. She thought Haruhi was a pretty likable quirky character. After seeing the God Knows scene, she came to understand more why I collect anime figures, and appreciated my Bunny Girl Haruhi more. This was an interesting step that I thought I would never see.
This series made my wife understand what anime is all about.
It seemed pretty evident at this point that she was ok with watching anime, but a lull suddenly came, and we didn’t watch anime for almost half a year. Mainly because there was so much other stuff we had to do, and didn’t have the time to watch anymore.
I tried again, this time with Haibane Renmei. Did not want. She didn’t like the old-style fantasy setting, and it’s evident that she will probably never watch any anime based in a fantasy setting, or old-european setting. (I intend to change that someday, but not now). Switching gears, I tried Manabi Straight. This was another girly-girl series, with ultra-adorable characters, and a very clean art style. Again, like Azumanga, we watched it during her exercise, as it was also the only real time we had to watch something together. She didn’t like it. It was too cutsey, too plotless, and again, there’s a dumb and dense girl in it.
This girl ruined the series for my wife. Why Mikan, WHY??!
Personally, I liked the series, and Mikan was my favorite character from the series. Regardless, I stopped watching the series half-way and decided to bring in something along the same slice-of-life lines, but a little bit less childish. This came in the form of the epically awesome Lucky Star. Since my wife was on the exercise machine, there was nothing she could do but watch and try to enjoy the series. She got into it very quickly, and really liked the characters. The series wasn’t really about anything in particular, with no plot as well, but she seemed to enjoy the banter between the characters.
Even my wife can’t resist the beautiful Konata.
After the span of 2 months and 6 episodes later, we started to watch the series in the bedroom on our Macbook. It was a lot more comfortable there, and she continued to enjoy the series. Ocassionally we would hook it up to the widescreen in the living room too. The only problem she had with the series actually was the rather empty conclusion. To me it was a great ending, but she felt a bit robbed that they didn’t actually show the final performance (though I thought there wasn’t a need to, and the way it was portrayed worked out better). Oh, and she hated the Lucky Channel. I guess she doesn’t like overly peppy squealing girls.
To keep the momentum going, I quickly started her on Kannagi, recommended by another friend. She liked the characters, made parallels between Nagi and Haruhi, and was pretty hooked to the series near the end. The drama was quite nice and gripping. Surprisingly, she never remarked about the fan-service as she usually does. There isn’t much of it other than a few deliberate gratuitous thigh shots, but it was strange she never said anything. Again though, she was disappointed that the ending didn’t really have much of an ending. I had to explain to her that the manga stalled partway through, so the series couldn’t really continue.
Did I have to choose such a yuri-suggestive screenshot? Of course not!
At this point in time, our anime-watching became obsessive. We would watch several episodes in one sitting, sometimes until 2am (this from a couple that normally sleeps at 11pm). Did we have enough? Of course not! After burning through Kannagi, I had another anime lined up immediately! I realized at this point that watching a series we would both enjoy was the ticket. Upon getting another recommendation from a friend, we started watching Tora Dora!.
This was by far, the most memorable series, and probably one of the best we’ve seen together. I could tell that my wife enjoyed it immensely. There was just the right mix of comedy, romance, and slapstick humor, and I’ve come to really dig tsundere archtypes. My wife really loved the good-natured personality of Ryuji, and I really loved the contrasting but adorable little Taiga. Minori was also a blast.
Damn straight she does. How can you beat that? You simply can’t.
Needless to say, the voice actress for Minori became the start of an unreal enlightenment for my wife. I’ll explain later. I picked up Aria next, but that was quickly shot down after two episodes. Again, fantasy-based worlds, boring slice of life anime, zero plot. Dropped. I decided to backtrack into an older drama, which at the start of all this, would never imagine my wife watching – an anime based on an eroge.
All Japanese girls love to be patted on the head. Try it!
Kanon. What some believe is the origin of moe. I read only quick reviews on it, from animenewsnetwork. Since it was one of the top 20 anime to watch, and it was a romantic drama comedy, I figured this would stand up to Tora Dora!. Well, it didn’t. Not to the same effect, but my wife was into it nonetheless. The first 4 or 5 episodes or so, she couldn’t stand the absolute airheadedness of all the female characters. But soon afterwards, when the plot finally started to pick up, and the mysteries abound, she settled down and accepted it for what it was worth. Overall, she thought that the series didn’t make her feel very good. It was full of broken girls, depressing situations, and even suicide. The series was a bit too emotional. One thing that did highlight it a little was when my wife suddenly realized that Ayu’s voice actress was the same voice actress as Minori from Tora Dora!. I was incredibly surprised that she managed to pick that up. Truly on her way to otakudom.
Minori… I mean, Ayu… do you always sound like a little girl?
Having watched depressing Kanon, I figured we should try something much lighter. I dug through my backlog again, and pulled out Rizelmine. The amount of fan-service in this was definitely phenominal. I remember watching it many years back, and thought it was funny, only remembering that there didn’t seem to be much fan-service. Maybe my tastes at the time were a bit more extreme than now. Needless to say, she enjoyed the show. Not to the same level of Tora Dora!, but the humor was purely something worth laughing at, and the characters were colorful. She didn’t like how childish it all seemed but was glad it was a switch from Kanon. She liked the little bit of light romance that was in the series too.
So much fanservice… this show is definitely NOT for kids!
Soon after, we started watching Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. It was during this time that I started downloading Nodame Cantabile’s second season. I figure I’d use that as a trump card if necessary. My wife was surprised at the interesting art style of beautiful japanese patterns, bloom effects, and cherry blossoms. But she thought the series was too weird for her. She enjoyed the obsessive strawberry cake scene, and the chain stalkers scene, but overall she couldn’t really get into it. Looks like this is a series I’ll be watching myself instead.
Sayonara… Zetsubou Sensei…
What next? I thought. I was running out of ideas, and there were still series I was downloading. It was too soon for the trump card anyway. Since we were on the old-school track, I decided to brave the one thing that had been bothering me since the beginning of all this: Love Hina.
Love Hina gets a second chance. But it was me that killed it.
“Are you trying to trick me?!” she asked. I said no, it really is not what you think! I tried to convince her to watch it again before, or to read the manga before, but this was different now. “It’s a romantic comedy. You have to put aside the lame fan-service though.”
She gave in, and decided to watch it. Though she didn’t hate it like she had before, she also didn’t like it. And to her defense, I didn’t like it either. The series was shallow, the pacing was wrong, and the characters weren’t likable. “I liked the manga more. That one made more sense, and was more heavily emphasized on the romance.” I concluded to her, but she didn’t really feel like reading the manga. This wasn’t a loss, as she did sit through the series to the end. I didn’t even bother with the OVAs, even though she asked “What about the rest?”. I personally wasn’t invested in this series anymore, and just started reading the manga again. What I did like though, is how she again, recognized Yui Horie’s voice. “That’s Minori!!”
So that’s it, right? We’ve come full circle. Don’t forget about the yuri!
Read the review here!
As I had posted a review previously, I won’t delve into the details. My wife was totally weirded out by it. It wasn’t that she couldn’t accept lesbian romance. It was just foreign to her. I explained to her the whole symbolic reasoning behind Hazumu being a girl, and I think she got that. She did enjoy the romance though. She just wished it wasn’t with a bunch of girls…
This time, I was the one that pointed out that Yasuna was voiced by Yui Horie. “It’s Minori!”
Having gotten off old-school train, I figured it was time to give her a rest. I could tell that she wasn’t enjoying anime as much as she was before Kanon. I began to notice the reason why, and decided to pull out the trump card. At this point, I no longer considered it a trump card, but as a reason.
If you’ve read this far, and you’re thinking you can get your significant other to watch Death Note or Ghost in The Shell with you, then you have missed the point entirely.
Throughout this journey, I’ve discovered that my wife doesn’t want to just watch anime. She wants to spend time with me, sharing an interest that we can both enjoy together. This isn’t just about getting her to watch anime. It’s about getting me to watch anime with her. Not just any anime. But an anime that we can both enjoy.
So for you, you really have to just test the waters. Find out what she likes, what she doesn’t like, and aim towards that. At first, you may not enjoy watching some “lame anime series” with her, but you will appreciate the fact that she is watching anime, and understand that she’s watching anime with you.
Well, I’m going to enjoy the remainder of Nodame Cantabile Paris. Then I’ll probably bring on some K-ON! sprinkled between some Honey and Clover.
Comments? Suggestions? Agree or disagree? Bring it on!

LoL good work Radiant! As for me, Cardcaptor Sakura is still my favourite anime of all time ^^
Oh and I loved that OCD strawberry shortcake scene in Zetsubou-sensei too
@lightningsaber: I have to admit, I did like Card Captor Sakura. At first I thought “jail bait”, but I really started to appreciate the overall kawaii moe-ness of it all. Kero-chan is still my favorite little side-kick. Nothing can beat him.
The jailbait thing didn’t even cross my mind. Just an innocent magical girl show to me ^_^ …that happen to have some connotations of yuri, yaoi, incest & lolicon in between ^^;;;
Oh I got a picture of Kero cosplay on my AnimeBoston post
I misinterpreted this when you said based on an eroge cus kanon was based on an eroge but it is my favorite anime but for a completely different reason plus it has no ecchi content it it and has close to no fanservice. But at least your wife likes it but it is kinda depressing.
@garturo62: I’d like to know, why does your wife like Kanon? My wife liked it for the drama, and the main character was compassionate. She did not like how depressing the overall mood was though. She also didn’t like how overall dumb most of the females appeared to be.
I call your move on Rizelmine a brave move. Personally, I wouldn’t reccomend it to anyone else; they’ll have to get interested in it themselves. ^_^|||
Still your wife’s recognition of Yui Horie’s voice is quite astounding to me, I’ve watched quite a number of animes with the same VAs in them myself; the only one I could recognize was Soichiro Hoshi and that was only because Kira Yamato(GS/GSD) and Michael Garret(GxS) sound the same.
@ Sgt. NoOb: I was actually hesitant at first to bring up Rizelmine. It became a question of whether or not she was ready for it, and how she would take the humor. It was good that even though there was sexual innuendo, it was presented mostly innocently, so that children wouldn’t really understand, but adults would have something to laugh about.
If you look at Rizelmine only on the surface, it really is quite light and entertaining. The people that look too deep into it will see domestic abuse, child exploitation, etc. I don’t think that was ever the intent of the series though.
Have you tried “Victorian Romance Emma”? the anime and manga are slightly different, but both are extremely enjoyable. It’s a romance story set in London, quite beautiful.
“Ristorante Paradiso” is set in Italy and is about this 20 year old girl that has an infatuation with a very mature man (I believe he’s past his fifties). It also revolves around this restaurant where all the waiters are mature men with glasses.
“Paradise Kiss” is about a high school girl that is introduced to the modeling world. A LOT of women absolutely loved this!
“Skip Beat” features Ryoko, a kickass girl who’s seeking revenge against her backstabbing ex-boyfriend and enters the talent/idol world.
For cute there’s “chi’s sweet home”, it all about a kitty, very short episodes.
“doujin work” could help your wife understand more about doujinshi, and it’s short and fun (how about genshiken too?).
“Welcome to the NHK” might be a little depressing, but it plays a lot with the feelings and thoughts of the main character and how he tries to overcome his hikikomori ways
It seems she doesn’t like fantasy or slice of life, but how about “mushishi”? it’s not funny but the folklore is interesting.
Since she liked Lucky Star, how about some “hidamari sketch”? it’s slice of life but maybe she could like it.
I suggest I”s the manga, although is ladded with fan-service the progression of the story and the personalities and relationships of the characters are beautifully portrayed. I was moved to tears at times, personally.
Maybe I’m impossing too much and you probably thought of all these, but I really think she will like at least the first three (if you haven’t tried them already); always feels great to help a new fan enjoy more series ^^
@yaku : Wow! Thanks very much for your recommendations! Domo arigato!! I will definitely check out the series you mentioned! I was curious about “Welcome to the NHK”. I’ll definitely be cautious about that one, as it sounds like it deals with some pretty deep issues aside from the humor.
I personally want to watch Mushishi. Everyone says it’s a great anime. I don’t know if my wife would be interested in it, but it’s worth a shot.
Hidamari Sketch looks interesting. The character designs strongly resemble Kashimashi. I’m also thinking that since she liked Lucky Star and Haruhi, perhaps K-ON! would be a nice natural progression too.
I personally liked I”s and Video Girl Ai a lot, but yeah, the fan-service is a bit much. I’ve always loved Masakazu Katsura’s work, and the romance has always been pretty well illustrated. A bit too much inner-monologue though.
Interestingly enough, I’ve never thought of all these anime. Thanks for suggesting them!
Fantastic post, Radiant! I’m a bit more fortunate in the sense that my girlfriend enjoys anime too, but she’s kinda into the fighting/action types, which I enjoy too, but I thought she might’ve liked Toradora! more. Admittedly, I loved the latter and am a sucker for the romance comedy genre. Sometimes it appears that she’s the guy and I’m the girl. LOL!
@Anime Figures Toys : I actually find it very interesting that your girlfriend is into the opposite of what most girls are into when it comes to anime taste. Yours is the perfect example of the disclaimer I wrote “my suggestions may not be for you, but my story may be insightful”.
The important thing is to learn how to figure out what the both of you enjoy watching together, even if it’s the same series for different reasons.
I know what you mean by the gender-bender aspect. I feel the same from time to time on certain habits we have.
Maybe Hetalia: Axis Powers is a good one? Short 5-min episodes for you busy couples. Might want to avoid it if your wife’s sensitive to World War settings.
@SnooSnoo: Looks interesting. 5-minute episodes seem like a good quick fix of comedy, if the comedy is good. I’ll look into that too!
hehe I enjoy watching anime with my husband, but we sometimes have different tastes where the anime is concerned! LOL he did managed to get me watching some Gundam series tho lol! I’d be watching some stuff and telling him Oh I think he’ll like it etc etc
Sometimes he search for stuff which he think I might be interested in but I end up being really bored LOL
Weird, I thought I replied to these comments…
It’s interesting how different tastes in a relationship work. You guys are in the same situation as us then. ^_^;
The cool thing is that you’re actively sharing together. That’s the important part.
Yes, I was gonna be one of the people who would have asked why you didn’t introduce her to Naruto, or Death Note, or something like that. You say that she is trying to get you to watch anime with her, but I see it the other way around. After all, you’re the one initiating all the different shows for the two of you to watch, and she’s just going along with it. I watch some anime with my daughter, but we have different tastes as well, and that’s okay too. She doesn’t need to watch everything that I watch, and I don’t want to watch everything that she watches.
It’s true that you guys don’t have to always watch whatever together. At the same time, it makes a lot of sense to do so. Why spend time watching something alone when you can watch something together? It’s a lot more fun that way too. It just requires more work to find something both are interested in.
Well, you’re a lucky person. I’ve picked the wrong school to go to in this respect (University of Toronto has a huge anime club). However, education comes first so I don’t regret it.
But to be perfectly honest I’m really behind in terms of anime since there’s always other stuff that needs to be attended to, so that certainly doesn’t help ^^;
I must tell you, my wife originally lived half-way across the globe. I met her on the internet over 10 years ago. We’ve been married for that long, yes.
It’s okay to be behind in anime. When you’re behind in something, it means you’re ahead in something else.
try to watch Nana or Paradise Kiss with her
Very nice progression ^^. Guess she’s a Minori fan girl xD. Harsh that she disliked ARIA, though I’m biased since I’m an ARIA fanboy
. Me and my girlfriend are watching animes we recommend to each other. So far Sailor Moon, CCS, Lucky Star, Nodame (she doesn’t like Nodame because she’s annoying ^^;;;), Shana, Toradora, and more in the future; I’m planning for Moyashimon xD.
Not sure if she’s a Minori fan girl, or just able to pick out the voice very well. I might have to pick up Aria again and watch it myself. I do like the premise, and it seems like such a laid back anime.
Nodame herself definitely has some annoying traits about her, but it’s also what makes her more interesting than the other characters. Everyone else in the series is so serious to a fault. They become so bland. At least Nodame brings color into the series. Her way of playing music totally reflects her personality too!
Hi RadiantDreamer,
1stly, thanks for commenting in my blog & adding me into ur blogroll! :p glad u like what I did on my post about ur beautiful photos of figures!
2ndly, U’re doing what I’m doing to my Hubby! LOL. I’m the otaku here, my hubby wasnt (he was more of a hardcore gamer). I’m introducing him some animes when we were dating, he liked it & he grows interest in anime until now.
But he doesnt watch as much as I do, since he only watch those with shounen-genre & filled with some good actions + storyline. While me also like watching anime based on Eroge, school-life type, romance, drama, etc. He doesnt mind watching Haruhi though, but he hates eroge-based anime which is so typically has 1 guy surrounded by many girls (& he said most of the guy in this kind of anime is such a sissy !!! lol).
Thanks to me, he knows anime world & thanks to him, I know the gaming world too :p
Oh btw, I’m adding u to my link page too! ^_^
And oh, I just want to comment on ur “What normal girl would not want to watch this series. C’mon.”
I dont like watching CCS, I hate it totally. Not sure why, maybe cuz of the hype back then. I dont have any grudge againts loli-characters either since Im watching Rizelmine type of animes too.
The only anime I watched from CLAMP is Chobits & I like it. But not sure why i hate CCS alot, maybe storyline + characters design & personality doesnt suits me :3
I can see how the storyline and character personalities/clothing design may not appeal to you. It’s very much a mindless repetitive “magical girl” series after all. I wasn’t too fond of the plot, but I did like the characters. I thought they were pretty cute.
So Japanese girls like to be padded on the head? How did you find out?
What about Japanese boys (or men)? Do they like it too?
That’s awesome, turning your wife from thinking that anime is perverted into an otaku.
And yeah, the Love Hina anime wasn’t really good compared to the manga. Too many fillers and not enough story. I liked it when I first watched it.. then I read the manga. Whole lot of difference.
As for suggestions, NANA, Itazura na Kiss, Ouran High School Host Club, Rozen Maiden or School Rumble. All seem like series your wife might like. Oh, Honey & Clover is a good choice. Great show.
I’ve got Honey and Clover on my macbook now, and we watched the first two episodes. It was pretty good, but then we stopped because we didn’t have time anymore. That kinda sucked… we’ll get back into it, I’m sure, but so far it’s a pretty forgettable start to the series.
This is a really nice story. Its great that your wife has picked up an interest in Anime and that you both can share an activity you guys enjoy.
You are a really lucky guy to have such a nice girl thats willing to spend the time with you and things she didnt like (at first)
Im thinking about how to hook your wife up on medieval settings but the only other series that comes to mind is Spice and Wolf.
It has a nice subtle theme of romance but its really slow paced and might not be of interest to her.
Thanks for sharing ! ^^
Hey Blowfish! Thanks for checking out my blog! I definitely want to keep you guys updated on what series we end up watching (whenever that will be). Maybe then a whole new slew of suggestions from you guys would be awesome. Who knows how here tastes are going to evolve!
Interesting choices of anime! I lot of romance comedies that I luv too. (I guess you can read what most girls want to watch.) It sounds so sweet that she’ll get into anime to spend time together! heehee… Honey & Clover will be a good choice. I’ll suggest a few more.
Special A: you said your wife doesn’t like stupid girls, well here’s one where the main female protagonist is an A student, 2nd rank in the school, but not terribly bright when it comes to love. It’s very cute and very funny! My brother & I couldn’t stop laughing in episode 7.
La Corda D’oro: sounds like your wife likes music related anime? (Nodame! luv it…) This one has a very pretty art style, very pretty looking boys, and very beautiful classical music too. It tells a story about this girl who doesn’t know anything about music, but eventually finds her love for playing music with help from her friends.
BTW, have she watched Nodame Cantabile Live action Jdrama? another option
I’ll second on “Skip Beat!”. So funny… lots of emotional situations that Kyoko (main female character) has to deal. The acting scenes are so real it draws you in, it’s unbelievable, I had to hold my breathe in suspense.
NANA: another music related anime about two females who share the same name with totally different goals in life. One forms a band and tries to make it big, and the other one just wants to marry and live as a housewife. The music is amazing in this anime, maybe your wife will start liking Jpop / Jrock too.
Ok, none of the anime she watches are fighting related, so I’m going to throw one out.
Read or Die: about 3 Chinese girls who can weild paper weapons. It’s witty, funny, and very mysterious. Dramatic and interesting twists in the story. They love books and love to solve mysteries.
Oh don’t forget Miyazaki’s films!
& “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time”: very sweet and funny, but a weird twist of fate brings about some trouble situations. Kinda sad, be warned.
Wow! That’s quite the list! Thanks for the recommendations!
My wife has watched a few Miyazaki films already, like Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and Mononoke-Hime.
I don’t think she’d like the live-drama version of Nodame. I personally detest it. It’s just too weird and forced.
A few months ago, we watched 5cm per second. She seemed to like it. I think she might also like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. It seems highly recommended by all sorts of people.
Thanks for writing!
you can’t resist konata… konata is like an angel… moe angel… LOL

ooH cool. Thank for sharing with this site!
You sound like spam…? deleted your hentai link.
Wow! Just barged in from figure.fm and clicked on this article. Your wife’s view towards anime is a bit like my older sisters XD. If you would still like to find a new anime for your wife to watch I have a good one.
Have you heard of Kimi ni Todoke? In my opinion it is probably the best series for the fall season. Waiting a week for a new episode to be out may seem tedious but I think the first two episodes will capture her heart. Its very heartwarming and you just can’t help but smile when watching it. I’m sure your wife and anyone else who watches it will love it, even you may come to love it.
Setting is based on the typical high school love life, as for the theme, probably something around with expressing yourself/thoughts may actually lead to good results or so, or being confident in yourself or so.
Most important characters are Kuronuma Sawako(Main), given the nickname Sadako same as the girl from the horror “The Ring,” and is a girl who the whole school has rumored to have the ability to see/call ghosts, curse people, and the like and everyone are scared to interact with her also due to her not being able to correctly socialize with others such as smiling in a way that seems creepy. The typical nice guy who likes her, Kazehaya Shouta who is adored by many fan girls and will be the reason for many problems Sawako will encounter due to all the other girls being jealous of how he is nice to her and is giving her all of his attentions.
Art style seems to be based more on the bishounen style so it wont be a straight turn off for a non-moe fan, also no fan service and from the looks of it will be none as its not a fanservice anime.
Heard people said the manga was really good as well, I’ll be checking it out in a while too as the anime has peaked my interest in the original story as well.
See you! \(^o^)/
Hello! Good to see you here now! I’ll definitely check out Kimi ni Todoke. It seems kinda interesting. And with it being non-fan-service is a good plus. The style may be a little too bishounen for my tastes, but so was Nodame Cantabile, but I ended up loving the series. Thanks for the tip! ^_^
Radiant,
Just happened to find your page. Interesting article you wrote. I too am a wife who likes anime …. always have ever since high school with “Our Starblazers” …… yes long, long time ago as I am now almost 40 – OUCH!!
I watch many anime with my husband (code geauss, gundam, death note, mushishi, etc) I appreciate anime and the way it is drawn plus the story lines.
I have been watching kyo karo maoh ……. love it. There is a good chance that your wife will like it too. It’s funny, has a good story line and the characters are well thought out and complexed.
I also like ghost hunt and D-greyman.
I must say that these days I would rather watch a good anime again that I have already seen than most of the movies that are coming out these days ……. and certainly would rather watch it than all the reality TV dribble on the tube.
I think that you guys spending time together watching anime is awesome
Thanks for the kind words. I’m not that far behind you in terms of age myself. O_O
So I find it very cool that you’re almost 40 and watching anime. You’ve definitely seen more series than my wife, and you’re also more open to a variety! I hope my wife can get into more series!
We (myself and her both) haven’t had the time to watch anime in a long time. And when we do have time, we’re currently hooked on BBC Natural History series (she got the bluray set for me as a present, and I love it!) So we curl up and watch some animals doing their things when we have time.
I agree with you that I’d rather watch some anime than some crappy TV show. The only TV show I watch nowadays is Grey’s Anatomy. Rampant drama!
You know what? I’ve read the manga series of Death Note and loved it, but haven’t watched the anime yet! O_O
I haven’t read the manga for DN but did like the anime. It certainly deals with the evil in the human heart but I really liked the strategy in the story line ….. totally awesome. That’s probably why I like code Geauss too – they are much the same plot but CG is not dark.
I too have not had the time to watch anime like I would like to …… actually finally finishing up my degree after way too long. I have 5 more weeks and I will be done.
There is an anime convention in VA in June 2010 – can’t wait to go to that ….. it’s been 10 -12 years since I went to one of those ……. they are a blast.
Alas, I must get back to working on my senior project requirements that are due today so I am not up till midnight tonight …… only 5 more weeks and I can maybe catch up on my anime watching (and lots of other things too) – woohoo.
Wow! Congratulateions on getting your degree!
Definitely this last leg is your highest priority! I wish you the best of luck! Gambatte!
Radiant,
Here are a few more that I have watched that I think that might be worth you looking into for your wife to watch if you haven’t already:
Get Backers
)
Full Metal panic
Fate Stay Night (one of my favs)
Chrono Crusade (funny, romantic, good story line)
Tsubasa (by CLAMP)
Black Cat
Elemental Gelade
Detective Loki
12 Kingdoms
DNAngel (hated to see this one end
Heroic Age
Hunter x hunter (a bit older than the others but still one of my favs – season 4 is coming out on DVD english dubbed Dec 1st – can’t wait)
Kaze no Stigma (stong lead female and underlying romance plus action)
Kino’s journey (this is “deeper” than the others listed but very good)
I also agree with the other poster that Read or Die was great too – very strong female characters and humor too.
Please post if you find any new ones coming out soon that sound interesting
Cheers!!!
Ooh thanks for the recommendations! My wife might like Tsubasa (since she liked CC Sakura) and DNAngel would be good Yaoi exposure.
They still haven’t published the last couple of volumes of the manga (Tokyopop) I’m just hangin’ there!
Haven’t read much manga — been reading college books for three years
Is there a place on line to read them in English?
Do they usually continue on when the anime leaves off ……… some of the anime endings just really peeve me because they are so abrupt!!
Gosh – I never thought that DNangel was yaoi because they all had female love interests in the anime ……. is the manga more on the yaoi side?
Kyo Kara Maoh certainly is more yaoi but more in a funny way …… main character (yuuri the next demon king) ends up accidentally getting engaged to a guy in the demon kingdom. Pretty hilarious at times but doesn’t take it too far. I think it is a beautifully drawn anime too.
Okay – really ……. now I’m back to my senior project …… no really
I’ll be back here …….. promise!!!
DNAngel manga can be purchased online on amazon.com. It’s published by Tokyopop. Not sure about the scanalations though. I’m sure google may yield some results.
I haven’t watched the anime, so I don’t know to what degree yaoi is there. In the manga, Daisuke definitely has a female love interest, but that other fair-haired guy seems more than obsessed with him. There isn’t any direct yaoi, but it’s hinted in there – much like Card Captor Sakura’s Tomoyo-chan over-idolizing and nurturing of Sakura.
