Mirai Fan Art

2009 November 6

Well, it’s Friday again, but instead of a figure photoshop this week, I decided to do a fan art of Mirai from dannychoo.com. Hot off the press, just finished 10 minutes ago, radiantdreamer brings the latest news to you!

I decided to try out something new with this one and completely abandoned my normal methods of painting. I usually paint in several layers, and always keep my sketch and line art separate from the color layers.

This time, I decided to see what would result if I painted everything on a single layer. I started with a rough sketch, and then did some basic color blocking on a new layer. After that, I merged both layers together, and began painting over the sketch. I should have cleaned the sketch a bit more before doing this, as this brought in a lot of problems later with the messy lines.

Overall, I had fun doing this, but I’ll have to refine this method a bit more if I want to create more loose drawings. I don’t think anime is a good subject for painting loose.

The original sketch. It’s actually not too bad. I like it. Much of the subtle cute parts about the sketch were lost after painting over it.

The final image. Click on it for a larger size. The final image looks very polished, with good lighting, but much of what made the sketch look cute has been lost due to too much fiddling with the eyes. Though I still like this one for the softer, sweeter demure.

And of course, a youtube video!

Thanks for viewing!

I’ve always been a fan of sketches. Funnily, the background is the same colour as an RPG I got a sketch on by the creator of the comic it’s based on :D

Woah, and I thought my news was fast. Your comment arrived only minutes after I posted! :D

Sketches have an interesting “feel” to them that make them natural for some reason. I’m quite a fan of sketches too. That’s why I retain my sketch layers too. :)

Just happened to look at my “Blog Surfer” page at the right time :)

Thanks, that was fun, just sitting back with a cup of hot chocolate and watching you draw and paint. So used to thinking about drawing as an analogue thing that when you use the tools to bend or reposition some of the lines is trippy.

^_^ I’m glad you could sit down and enjoy it!

The warp tool is very useful for re-working problem areas. It degrades the pixels somewhat, but since I’m working on a huge scale (600dpi) it’s negligible.

It does look kinda trippy watching it in fast motion. When I did it to Saber Lily Nendoroid’s wings, it looks like they’re fluttering!

Good job on the drawing as always, Radiant! I thought you were going to forget the hairclip! XD

^_^ Thanks! I left it to the last because it’s a finishing touch! Plus with a single layer painting, it would have gotten painted over if I did it too early anyway. :P

Wow……… (mouth open) That was utterly amazing! Great work! That’s all I’m able to type…

    Gorgeous Mirai ^^
Thanks for the vid once again, it’s nice to see the whole process, really entertaining =)
The best part in my opinion is when you started giving relief to the skirt. I was like “wooho, amazing!”.

Thanks lu-k! Glad I can provide you with enjoyment! :D

You liked the skirt eh? Just the right length. ^_^

Wow! It’s amazing! I really like the soft colors you’ve used.

thanks! It’s using the technique of alternating between the eyedropper tool and brush in order to blend the colors together.

I’m a little sad that Danny hasn’t commented on my post on figure.fm though. :(

Master, teach me how to draw! Your artwerx never cease to amaze me…
I am too lazy to draw lately.

    • 2009 November 8

Don’t worry, there are down times when people don’t draw. There have been several instances when I got lazy and haven’t drawn for months on end!

If you try to make a habit out of it to do something, you’ll eventually fall into a routine!

That’s lovely Mirai-chan you got there! Danny hasn’t posted a comment here or figure.fm, huh. Well, he has too many visitors, maybe? (Just kiddin) I’m not an artist, but I’ve done a few CG paintings. That’s a great paint you’ve done on a single layer.

I rarely use Warp function (is it?). Now that I’ve seen a few of your tutorials, I’ve gotta try to use it more. Thanks for the tut!

      Heya thanks! It’s strange, I don’t know what Danny’s posting habits are. I thought that he would at least comment on everyone’s Mirai fan art. I thought my art was at least good enough for that. ^_^;

Yeah, warp is cool. Good luck!

You impress me more and more. You’re really gifted.
    An amazing creation. Congrats!

Oops, I didn’t comment on this one ^^; But you got my comment on Figure.FM :)

Any inspiration for the pose or just something you thought off-hand?
